Atrial Fibrillation center at CARE Hospitals

Atrial Fibrillation center at CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad

India’s first Atrial Fibrillation (A fib) center was unveiled at CARE Hospital, Hyderabad on the 7th of  July, 2012. This is an important contribution to patient care by  CARE Hospital, India’s 4th largest chain of hospitals, considering its contribution to the health care industry and cardiac patients in particular.
Atrial fibrillation (A fib) accounts for more than a third of hospitalizations in patients suffering from heart rhythm disorders. A fib is an irregular and rapid heart rhythm. This results from abnormal electrical impulses generated from the upper chambers (atria)  causing the heartbeat to be fast and irregular. This irregularity could be continuous or intermittent and erratic. The most common symptom in people with intermittent A fib is palpitations, often perceived as a pounding sensation in the chest. Many people also describe an irregular fluttering sensation in their chests. A fib is associated with a five-fold increase in the risk of stroke and in the extreme situation even death.
As a permanent cure for this condition catheter based therapies have been developed. The highlight of this programme will be  a demonstration of Catheter Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation which will be telecast to over 20 Cardiology institutes. International and national Pioneers in this field will participate in demonstration of these procedures to different centers across the country.
To improve awareness and optimize patient care, CARE hospitals has organized a workshop on 7th and Symposium on 8th of July at the Novotel Hotel, Airport, Hyderabad. Dr. Dipen Shah, University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland, Dr. Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy, University of Kansas Hospital, USA, are the distinguished invitees participating in this programme, in addition to several eminent national faculty. Various aspects of  A fib diagnosis and management  including newer anticoagulants, nonsurgical & surgical management of this condition will be discussed.  Left Atrial appendage occlusion to prevent stroke will also be demonstrated during this meeting. With better understanding of this condition, we can prevent serious complications, such as stroke. This unique and informative symposium will not only increase the awareness among the audience but also create a milestone in the treatment of Atrial fibrillation in India.

Smoking addiction among Indians- An alarming situation

‘World No Tobacco Day’ we should all spare a thought about the deteriorating health of our young and aspiring citizens due to smoking and tobacco consumption.
Our country is going through a phase of transition from a developing to developed country. During these times, the good health of our countrymen shall ensure achieving our goal of becoming a prosperous nation. Smoking and tobacco consumption has increased to a great extent in our country. There is also escalation of number of cases of diabetes, hypertension, heart attack, stroke and cancer especially among youngsters below 40 years of age.
“An estimated 10 lakh deaths in India are attributed to tobacco consumption. About 20% of male deaths and 5% of female deaths is due to smoking amongst Indians between 30 and 70 years”- said by Dr.Praveen Varma, Pulmonologist.
Time has come to think seriously about changing our lifestyle and concentrating more on quitting smoking and tobacco consumption, eating a healthy diet and regular exercise.
For years, we have been told through various sources about the serious consequences of smoking and tobacco consumption however, we seem to take it lightly until a catastrophic event or a disease develops by which time it may be too late to change our fate.
There is a great need to think now and act. Think about your family, your friends, yourself and your nation. Quit smoking- it is time!!!.
On the eve of the same CARE Hospitals, Nampally is organizing a free Stop Smoking camp from 28th May to 7th June. For registration call: 8790200112.

Success Story - Kidney Transplants

CARE Hospitals,Hyderabad completes 200 Kidney transplants in the city..........

CARE Hospitals,Hyderabad has  successfully carried out 200 kidney transplants. With this CARE Hospital has become one of the best centers in the city with best outcomes in Kidney Transplants.
The 200th transplant was performed on a  26-year-old patient, who was suffering from kidney failure due to some allergy, by senior consultant urologist Dr K Rama Raju. The donor's kidney was harvested (taken out from the donor) by Consultant Urologist & transplant surgeon Dr K Rama Raju  with support from other team of doctors. The patient, prior to the transplant, was being treated by senior consultant Nephrologist Dr. Rajsekhara Chackravarthy.
"Although kidney transplant is a high-end surgery, chances of organ rejection are minimal due to availability of extremely good medicines. It is one of the safest organ transplant operations. But since the recipient is put on immuno-suppressant medicines for preventing rejection, the person needs extremely good post operative care. Patient is kept in dedicated renal intensive care unit," said Dr Rajsekhara Chackravarthy
“Renal transplantation is the best modality of treatment as a successful renal transplant provides a better quality of life, is more cost effective and provides long term rehabilitation as compared to dialysis dependence. After a successful transplant one has greater freedom, less restricted diet and better energy levels” said Dr. Vikrant Reddy, Consultant Nephrologist at CARE Hospitals. The common symptoms of  for Kidney Failure & end stage renal disease include Urinating less than usual,Urinary problems - Frequency, urgency,Bleeding Fatigue & Confusion,Nausea, vomiting,Loss of appetite,Pain - In the muscles, joints, flanks, chest,Bone pain or fractures,Pale skin (from anemia).
According to Dr. B. Somaraju,Chairman & Managing Director “The kidney transplant is one more step in bringing all latest available treatment facilities under one roof and providing quality services. Organ donation could result from the free will of a person. There are almost 3 to 4 lac people who require a kidney to live their lives; out of these, only around 15 to 20 will stand a chance of getting an organ from a cadaver.  There is nothing in this world that can be compared to the feeling that one gets by saving someone else’s life. You could call this a job for a super hero. And that super hero is— you”
The State-of-the-art procedures for kidney transplantation include:
ñ  Living donor kidney transplants (related)
ñ  Cadaveric renal transplantation
In the first 10 years of the Renal transplant programme CARE Hospitals have performed over 200 transplants. The results compare favorably with those of the best centers in India & world
